A Practical Guide to Non-Toxic Living in a Toxic World
Toxins seem to be lurking everywhere. Harmful chemicals are in everything, From our food to the everyday products we purchase. While it may seem frustrating or overwhelming to know how to avoid toxic ingredients and live a healthy lifestyle, I want to encourage you to start learning what you can and make changes to embrace non-toxic living.
Toxins like heavy metals, preservatives, and synthetic fragrances are commonly found in personal care items, and they can seriously impact our health and well-being and cause multiple health issues like respiratory distress, allergies, and even cancer.Â
After my son was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia a few years ago, I started researching everything and learned some shocking statistics on how many toxins we are exposed to daily. We’ve since embraced non-toxic living and choose natural products whenever possible to help reduce our exposure and prevent further health issues in our family. Today’s post offers practical tips and strategies to help you reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals and embrace a non-toxic way of living.
While we are far from perfect, we’ve worked hard to learn how to avoid harmful toxins in our home and instead choose safer alternatives for things like household cleaning products, beauty supplies, food, and more. I’m sharing everything I’ve learned today so you can create a healthier lifestyle without the stress! Embracing non-toxic living can be simple, and I’m really excited to help you find safer options for all your favorite products!
Why we’ve chosen to live a non-toxic lifestyle
As I previously mentioned, our son was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia at the age of 4. With no prior history of cancer in our family, it came as a huge shock to my husband and I. Doctors told us that the type of cancer he had wasn’t hereditary and wasn’t caused by anything in his environment. It was just ‘bad luck,’ as they put it. That answer wasn’t good enough for us, so we started researching everything. Foods, household products, personal products; you name it, we researched it. We found out that we were exposing ourselves and our children to hundreds of dangerous toxins every single day.Â
I knew it was time to start changing things in order to protect our children from further danger, and that’s exactly what we did. It took months, and to this day, we still have work to do, but I’m so proud of the progress we’ve made thus far. We now aim for an 80/20 balance- 80% non-toxic, holistic approach, and 20% conventional. I’m not going to tell my kids no if they want ice cream or if my husband and I go on a date and end up at our favorite restaurant for dinner. Stressing about trying to achieve a 100% non-toxic home is just as unhealthy as the toxic chemicals in conventional products, so we work to make changes as much as we can and let go of the rest.

The impact of toxicity on our health
Unfortunately, toxins are everywhere- the air, water, food supply, and products we use every day. Toxicity refers to the degree to which a substance can harm humans or animals. Common toxic chemicals found in everyday products include phthalates, parabens, formaldehyde, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These substances can be found in everything from personal care items to household cleaners and even food packaging, and prolonged exposure to these chemicals can lead to a range of health issues, including allergies, hormone disruption, damage to the endocrine system, and cancer.Â
You may have learned in school that the largest organ in our body is the skin, and we need to be careful what our skin is absorbing. The good news is that with some simple shifts, you can make a huge difference and create a healthier home!
Benefits of a non-toxic lifestyle
Where do I even begin with the benefits of this lifestyle? While we made these shifts once a serious health concern arose, we should have made these changes a long time ago. We can’t go back, and dwelling on the past isn’t healthy, so instead, we choose to focus on things we can do now that will take our health in the right direction. Here are some of the most incredible benefits of a toxic-free lifestyle:
- reduced allergic reactions
- clearer skin
- balanced hormones
- better sleep
- lower cortisol levels
- disease prevention
- better reproductive health
- Stronger immune system
- improved gut health
In addition to the health benefits, non-toxic products are so much better for our environment! Not only will you reduce your toxic exposure, you’ll support the environment, too.
What does creating a non-toxic home look like?
This may seem overwhelming, but let’s take it one step at a time. There are incredibly easy ways to embrace a low-tox lifestyle today, while some changes will happen over time. Here are my favorite tips in order from the simplest tip to more challenging changes that may require more time or finances:
- Open your windows throughout the day to cycle the air in your home
- Take your shoes off at the door
- Swap cleaning supplies for low-tox alternatives like baking soda, vinegar, castile soap, and rubbing alcohol (I have a whole post on natural cleaners here!)
- Swap out dryer sheets for wool dryer balls. If you miss the scent, use a few drops of essential oil before tossing them in the dryer
- Get an air purifier for cleaner air year-round- PuroAir, Levoit, and AirDoctor are all excellent options
- Swap out candles, plug-in scents, and other air fresheners filled with synthetic fragrances for safer options like beeswax candles, essential oils, and other low-tox alternatives to reduce indoor air pollution
- Choose organic foods when possible to help cut back on exposure to harmful pesticides- the Dirty Dozen is an excellent place to start
- Slowly swap personal care and beauty products for cleaner, more natural brands that are trustworthy—I’ll share how to do this later!
- Ditch non-stick pans for a safer option like cast iron, stainless steel, and ceramic
- Swap any plastic cups, silverware, dishes, and tupperware for glass, steel, or ceramic alternatives
- Invest in a quality water filter—there are dozens of options, but here’s a great one that includes an under-sink setup and drinking water filter.
The goal of natural living is not to fear toxins and incessantly worry about what we’re exposed to. It’s also not to seek perfection because there is no such thing. The goal is to do our best, support our overall health, and reduce our toxic load. That way, when we are exposed to toxic items, our bodies are better prepared to handle them.Â
Â
Questionable chemicals to avoid
There are quite literally thousands of chemicals in everyday items, and I don’t suggest trying to memorize them all. Remember that non-toxic living is not about striving for perfection but striving for progress.
While it’s important to familiarize yourself with toxic ingredients and do your own research, websites like the Environmental Working Group (EWG) can help you find safer alternatives for all your favorite personal care products.Â
These are some important ingredients to try to avoid:
- Parabens
- PFAs
- Phthalates
- Formaldehyde
- Flame retardants
- Sulfates
- Phenols
- Triclosan
- Fragrance
- Ammonia
- Bleach
- VOCs
It’s crucial to research safer products and choose brands that are transparent and support a holistic lifestyle. Unfortunately, in the United States, all the research is up to us as consumers. Our government does not require strict product testing like other countries do.
In fact, compared to most countries in Europe, we are incredibly behind. Europe has banned over 1,300 chemicals, whereas the US has only banned around 11. It’s frustrating and disheartening that so much of the responsibility to research safer alternatives falls on our shoulders as consumers. As a country that is so progressive in many ways, we fall behind in an incredibly important area.Â
New habits to adopt when shopping
Grocery shopping can be stressful enough, so we’re going to keep this super simple. I previously mentioned choosing organic options when possible, but I want to share a few more tips for making the most of your budget and avoiding unnecessary ingredients in your food. We try to avoid pre-packaged foods as much as possible and instead opt for whole foods or make special treats ourselves, but I know this isn’t possible for all families.
Important ingredients to consider avoiding at the grocery store:
- Vegetable oils- sometimes referred to as seed oils, oils like canola, peanut, safflower, sunflower, rapeseed, grapeseed, and corn oil are toxic to our bodies and cause a slew of health issues. Instead, opt for coconut, avocado, olive oil, butter, or ghee.Â
- Artificial sweeteners—Chemicals like aspartame, sucralose, and saccharin are toxic and linked to harmful effects on human health. Opt for maple syrup, brown sugar, or honey, and consume in moderation.
- Added sugar
- Food dyes
- ‘natural’ flavoring- like synthetic fragrances, natural flavoring is often toxic and a mixture of multiple chemicals.
- Preservatives

Trustworthy brands that support non-toxic living
The following brands provide excellent options for safer alternatives for all your favorite products. Remember to research individual items, as I have not tested every item available. For example, Honest Beauty has incredibly clean tinted moisturizer, but some of their eyeshadows are not what I would consider ‘clean’. Research ingredients, check EWG’s SkinDeep Database, and make an informed decision before purchasing!

Staying motivated
One of the best things you can do as you embrace non-toxic living and work to make changes in your home is to find a supportive community of like-minded families who are working towards the same goal. It’s easier than ever with the help of social media to find people who have similar goals, so use it to your advantage. These people can help share suggestions for natural alternatives, encourage you as you make changes, and create new friendships. Social media can be an incredible tool to help you if you allow it. It’s been a great way for me to connect with others, and I’m grateful for the online friendships I have today!
Remember to make changes gradually as you can manage them. It may take years before you reach your goal, and that’s okay! The important thing to remember is that the changes you’re making to embrace non-toxic living will add up and have a huge impact on your health and your home. The goal is sustainable habit shifts that support your goal of a healthier living space that your whole family can enjoy!
