The Easter holiday has always been one of my favorites. We’re inching closer to warmer weather, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus and what He did for us all those years ago, and spending time with the whole family. What’s not to love?
While these are a beloved tradition, basket fillers often involve filling plastic Easter eggs with jelly beans and trinkets that contain unnecessary plastic waste. This year, why not consider incorporating eco-friendly alternatives into your Easter celebrations? In this post, we’ll explore over 50 awesome eco-friendly Easter egg filler ideas your kids will love!
For our family, being eco-friendly goes beyond caring for our environment and includes being conscious of decisions that could negatively affect our health. We love celebrating special occasions, they just look a little different now, and that’s okay!
The fun ideas I’m sharing today align with our personal beliefs while allowing us to choose great eco-friendly options.
Where do I begin?
Great question! the first step is an eco-friendly basket!
The basket is the main event. It holds all the small items, sweet treats, and surprises for your Easter activities. Additionally, a reusable Easter basket is an excellent option, eliminating the need to repurchase them each year. While they tend to be at a higher price point, if you choose quality materials, your baskets should last for years to come.
Are plastic Easter eggs a good option?
The short answer is no.
Little plastic eggs aren’t exactly the best option, but don’t stress! Try reusing eggs from last year, check Facebook Marketplace or your local thrift store, or go without! Remember that the goal is progress, not perfection, and reusing last year’s supplies is an excellent way to avoid purchasing new plastic-filled items.
If you’re trying to ditch plastic altogether, good for you! Keep reading for alternatives to plastic eggs.
We have never lined our baskets with plastic grass. We have cats and small children who like to put things in their mouths, and it’s never been worth the potential choking hazard. If you like lining your baskets, shredded paper is a great option!

Finding good eco-friendly easter egg fillers for young kids is probably the hardest. handing a baby small toys is never a good idea as it can be dangerous.
This is where breaking up a larger set of toys is a good idea! In addition to making things easier for you, you’ll save money by purchasing one toy and splitting it up.

Consider sunflowers for their bright blooms or herbs like basil or parsley that can be grown indoors or outdoors. We did this last year for our children, and it was so fun! They loved planting the seeds and watering them!

Turn old and broken crayons into new ones with this eco-friendly Easter egg filler idea. Simply melt down the crayon pieces and pour them into molds to create fun and colorful crayon shapes. Not only does this activity reduce waste, but it also allows children to get creative with their coloring.
