Non-toxic beauty tips for moms
Streamline your skincare and beauty routine
For moms on the go, simplicity is key. One of the best tips I’ve ever received is to consider streamlining your routine to focus on the essentials. A minimalist approach saves time and ensures that the products you use are carefully selected for their non-toxic qualities.
It may be an adjustment if you’re used to using multiple products, but spend your money wisely and create a routine safe for sensitive skin that provides non-toxic alternatives for all your favorite products. Regarding makeup products, go for a natural and time-saving approach. Choose multitasking products like a tinted moisturizer with SPF, a versatile cream blush that doubles as lip color, and a mascara that adds definition without clumps. These non-toxic options provide a fresh and effortless look for moms on the go.
Here are my favorite trustworthy non-toxic makeup brands:
Ilia– Ilia brand offers everything from tinted moisturizer to full coverage foundation. I especially love their 2-in-1 blush sticks that double as lipstick. My makeup routine is very simple, and Ilia provides products that last long, work well for different skin types, and simply my morning. They often have sales running that help stretch your budget further, so keep an eye out for those!
Beautycounter– While on the pricey side, Beautycounter offers an incredible variety of products that go beyond beauty and skincare. I am not an affiliate, but if you decide to become one, they offer discounts on all your purchases and competitive commissions.
Honest– I really like Honest brand products. They are affordable, work well, and skip most of the harsh ingredients I try to avoid making them one of the better choices. Most of their products are available on Amazon; if you use the subscribe & save option, you’ll save money!
W3ll People– I haven’t used many products from W3ll people, but their clean eyeshadows are some of the best I’ve ever tried.
Mineral Fusion– Another affordable brand offered through Amazon, so if you love what you purchase, you can save a little extra money! The pressed powder foundation is amazing and lasts all day. I also like their nail polish remover. There’s no harsh chemical smell, and it works wonderfully.
These brands offer natural beauty products that are safe for any skin type. You can create a clean beauty routine you feel good about with these safe products!
If in doubt, check the Skin Deep Database from the Environmental Working Group to see if your conventional beauty products are safe.
Non-Toxic Haircare Hacks
Busy moms need haircare that is as low maintenance as it is effective. Consider embracing quick hairstyles that don’t require much upkeep. Opt for non-toxic dry shampoos like a mixture of cornstarch and cocoa powder and minimalistic hair products to maintain healthy and manageable hair without compromising your schedule.
Extra non-toxic beauty tip: If you’re working on hair training, stretch out your hairstyles using dry shampoo at bedtime and overnight curlers. When you wake up in the morning, your hair will be beautifully curled, and by allowing the dry shampoo to work overnight, your hair will feel and look cleaner.
DIY Non-Toxic Beauty Recipes
Incorporate the simplicity of DIY beauty recipes into your routine by replacing your favorite masks and scrubs with safer alternatives. Whip up non-toxic face masks, scrubs, and hair treatments using ingredients from your kitchen without any harsh chemicals. These recipes are quick to make and offer the benefits of natural, chemical-free ingredients for your skin and hair!
Here are some of my favorite beauty recipes:
Dry Shampoo
2 T cocoa powder
2 T Cornstarch
Mix and store in an airtight container. If your hair is lighter, use less cocoa, if darker, use more. Shake onto roots and massage in.
Face Mask
1 T Aztec clay
1- 1 ½ T water
Mix ingredients and apply to face. Allow to dry for at least 20 minutes. Once dried, gently wipe your face with a warm, wet washcloth. Apply moisturizer.
Body Scrub
One cup brown sugar or white sugar
¼ cup melted coconut oil
Optional: 4-5 drops of vanilla or citrus essential oils
Mix ingredients and store in an airtight container. Scoop out the desired amount and scrub the skin to reveal soft, beautiful skin!
Hair treatment
2 T Greek yogurt
1/2 cup mayo
2 T coconut oil
Mix ingredients and coat hair thoroughly. Allow to sit for at least 60 minutes, and rinse with shampoo! This hair treatment will bring life and shine back into your hair. I like to use this hair mask 2-3 times a month, especially in the winter. The air here gets so dry that my hair becomes super dull. When I use this mask, my hair will actually cooperate with me.
Reading Labels and Choosing Non-Toxic Brands
One of my best non-toxic beauty tips is to educate yourself on how to read the ingredient list and identify harmful ingredients. Knowledge is power! Look for certifications such as “certified organic ingredients” or “non-toxic’’ and explore reputable non-toxic beauty brands that align with your values. Arming yourself with this information makes choosing products that prioritize your well-being easier. Unfortunately, the beauty industry in the United States isn’t held to the highest standards, leaving the responsibility of researching clean beauty products and avoiding harmful chemicals up to the consumers. The good news is that once you have this knowledge, it is much easier to avoid untrustworthy brands.
While this list is not exhaustive, these are toxic ingredients I try to avoid as much as possible:
- PFAs
- Phthalates
- Formaldehyde
- TALC
- Parabens
- Fragrance
- Triclosan
- Seed oil
- synthetic fragrances
- Sodium lauryl sulfate
These ingredients are known endocrine disruptors and lead to issues in the reproductive system, dry skin, respiratory distress, and more serious issues such as cancer. Because the skin is the largest organ in the body, it is crucial to choose non-toxic beauty products to avoid toxic chemicals as much as we possibly can.
Incorporating self-care into your beauty routine
As a busy mom, self-care often happens in small, intentional moments. Take advantage of your daily routine by turning simple acts into moments of self-care. Whether it’s a mindful skincare routine or a few minutes of quiet reflection, these moments contribute to your overall well-being. You deserve more than a few minutes, but if this is your starting point, take it and build on it! Create a list of affirmations to recite as you get ready for the day. Take time to walk for 10-15 minutes, or create an exercise regime to follow.
The balancing act of motherhood and self-care is challenging but achievable. Understand that your beauty routine doesn’t have to be extensive to be effective. By prioritizing non-toxic products, you’re taking care of yourself and setting an example of mindful living for your little ones.
Finding a supportive group of mom friends
An incredibly important part of creating a non-toxic beauty routine is finding a supportive community of mothers with like-minded values. Share your non-toxic beauty tips, clean products you trust, and experiences with fellow moms. Creating a supportive community allows you to exchange ideas, recommendations, and moments of self-care inspiration. Together, moms can empower each other to prioritize health and well-being in their busy lives. It has taken some time, but I am incredibly grateful for the supportive moms I have in my life who have shared what they’ve learned along the way and given me advice when I was first learning about natural alternatives for our home.
Final thoughts
Being a mom on the go doesn’t mean sacrificing your commitment to non-toxic beauty. Embrace simplicity, choose non-toxic skincare products, and integrate self-care into everyday moments. With these quick and efficient, non-toxic beauty tips, you can navigate the demands of motherhood while maintaining a beauty routine that supports a healthier and more balanced lifestyle!
