My Weekly Home Reset Routine and How to Create Your Own!
Adding a weekly home reset to your schedule not only clears your home, it clears your mind. Set yourself up for better productivity by pressing the reset button on your home at the beginning of a new week by creating a serene and organized living space that promotes well-being. In today’s post, I’ll share steps to successfully reset your home and bring order and calm to every corner!
Why do I need to do a weekly home reset?
A weekly home reset goes beyond just cleaning and organizing. It’s about creating an environment that nurtures your well-being, reduces stress, and invites a sense of calm. Investing time and effort into resetting your home sets the stage for a more enjoyable and fulfilling daily life.
My full-time job used to be keeping a tidy home. With six children at home, the laundry, crumbs, sticky floors, and scattered toys waiting to be stepped on seem endless.
If I didn’t have a cleaning schedule to follow throughout the week, I would have never been able to keep up.
But then our older children started pitching in. They took responsibility for different zones and managed their laundry on designated days.
While we still have young children at home, I now feel like I can take a breath. They still need reminders to check chores and start laundry but giving them these responsibilities was intentional.
Not because I want to drop everything on them (although it’s nice that my list of responsibilities has shortened!) but because I want our incredible children to succeed as adults when the time comes. I want them to feel confident in their abilities to care for their homes and be a blessing to their future spouses. Our children have responsibilities around the house regardless of their age or gender.
What is a home reset?
You may have heard this term from social media or other blogs before, but a home reset is cleaning and organizing your house and returning it to a tidiness baseline. Whatever that may look like to you, the purpose is to fully function in your home and create the atmosphere you enjoy the most. As a busy mom, the last thing I need is to spend a lot of time on a cleaning routine. At the end of the day, I manage my stress much better when I’m in a tidy space.
My weekly reset routine includes cleaning from top to bottom, clearing counters and shelves, putting items away properly, and then wiping down and cleaning surfaces, including floors. I have tasks I schedule on a daily basis, but spending a couple of hours every week preparing for Monday morning has helped create a productive week for our family.
Here’s what our weekly home reset looks like:
- Tidying all rooms by clearing counters and shelves
- Dusting and wiping down cleared surfaces
- Cleaning the bathrooms and restocking any items necessary
- Washing sheets and bath towels
- Cleaning windows
- Vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping
- Disinfecting bathrooms
- Grocery shopping and meal planning
This includes the entire home aside from our children’s bedrooms. They are completely responsible for their laundry and cleaning their rooms. I’m not overly strict when it comes to their bedrooms as that’s their space. If they aren’t overly concerned with tidy rooms, that’s fine! As long as they can find their things and they aren’t growing a science experiment, I don’t have a strong desire to force them to keep their rooms in pristine condition.
Why I love resetting my home every week
You may want to implement a home reset into your schedule for several reasons! For us, implementing a weekly reset checklist starts the upcoming week on the right foot. Little messes happen daily, and I know to expect that, but starting the week with a clean slate helps keep me relaxed and ready for a new week.
Visual noise
As a mom of six, physical noise is a constant in our home. Someone is giggling, hollering, squealing, or even meowing (We have a cat, not a meowing kid!) at any given moment. I tend to feel overwhelmed and need a few minutes to decompress. I don’t expect a totally perfect home, but visual noise is just as stressful for me as physical noise. Clearing counters and shelves, ensuring dishes are put away, and tidying the main areas like the living room are the highest priorities to reduce my stress.
Home upkeep
Resetting your space is excellent for maintenance as well. Cleaning rooms, checking outlets and light switches, replacing dead light bulbs, and monitoring for any necessary upkeep are great habits to create in your home.
Creating a relaxing atmosphere
Having a clean home helps me relax. When clutter is cleared, counters are emptied, and bookshelves are tidied, I can take a deep breath. I have a hard time staying focused and getting things done when I can see that my home is unorganized. Having a scheduled day to reset our home and maintain that throughout the week keeps me focused on other tasks and responsibilities like writing for my blog, spending time with my kids, or recharging my batteries. None of that would be possible without my cleaning schedule.
Declutter excess
If something hasn’t been worn, played with, or used for over a month, I feel perfectly fine donating or tossing the items. It’s less stuff that I am responsible for, and if someone in my family isn’t using it, there’s no need to hold onto it.
How to schedule a reset
This depends on the activity and schedule in your home. For our family, Sundays are our reset day. My husband works on Sunday morning, so the older kids and I divvy up the house and get to work. Because my husband works so much as it is, I don’t like cleaning on the days he’s home. I would much rather schedule our reset for a day he is already gone so we can spend as much time together as a family as we possibly can. Saturday morning we have a relaxing time, I schedule our grocery pickup order, and check my weekly planner for any upcoming appointments.
Because we’ve been doing this for so long, resetting our home takes about 90 minutes from top to bottom. We are thorough yet efficient with our time, and then the kids are free to spend Sunday afternoon doing whatever they’d like.
It’s become the best way to settle myself and calm down. I struggle with mess and visual noise, so the reward of a tidy home to start our week is motivation enough to continue our current schedule!
Helpful tools for your home reset
Vacuum– Even if you don’t have carpet, a vacuum is great for furniture and sucking up dust from your floors. I’m a big fan of cordless options as it makes cleaning so easy.
Spin mop– our favorite mop for getting our floors to shine.
Non-toxic cleaning products– my favorite recipes for all my favorite non-toxic cleaning supplies!
Microfiber washcloths– The best option for no-waste window cleaning.
Other tips for keeping your home tidy
Don’t wait!
No more procrastination. If it can get done, do it. Even if imperfect, start this week and get your home back in order. You’ll feel so good about your progress that you’ll feel motivated to keep it going! Dust, empty the trash bin, dust, or start a load of laundry. Get those simple tasks out of the way.
Choose the best day and stick to it
Whatever your weekly schedule looks like, choose a day of the week that makes it easiest to complete your reset and stick to it. Time yourself for motivation and see what you can get done. Don’t be afraid of hard work! You’ll feel so good checking cleaning tasks off your to-do list.
Create a list of goals
What are you trying to achieve with a home reset? Less stress? An organized home? A new habit? Let that be your motivator as you create a list of responsibilities.
Toss what you don’t use
We are over-consumers in the country. I mean seriously, who needs multiple Stanley cups? Get rid of the excess stuff!
Get comfortable with letting go of items that no longer serve you. Not only will it free up space in your home, but it also provides one led thing you’re responsible for maintaining!
I want to encourage you to implement a weekly home reset into your schedule and see what it does for you! If you haven’t noticed a difference after a few weeks, go back to what you were doing to maintain your home. But, if you’re feeling stressed out by your current habits, trying something new might be the perfect solution to your problems. Whatever you decide is best, stick to it and free up time for the important things in your life! If you have any tips or suggestions you think I should add, let me know in the comments below!

This is a great idea, I try to do it every week if not every 2 weeks. With these crazy schedules things can be missed no matter how large or small.
