The importance of non-toxic Halloween celebrations
If you’re new to non-toxic living, looking at holiday celebrations may have never crossed your mind, and that’s okay! If you’re not at a place where making changes to holiday celebrations seems manageable, save this post for another day.
Non-toxic Halloween celebrations are essential because of the potential health and environmental hazards associated with Halloween celebrations. There are harmful chemicals in everything from costumes and candies to décor. The tips I share today are not meant to scare you, only to encourage you to look at simple alternatives.
Non-toxic décor
When shopping for non-toxic Halloween or other holiday décor, here are some suggestions to consider:
Glitter:
While fun and festive, glitter is a microplastic disaster. It can cause damage to our immune and reproductive systems as well as developmental delays. In addition to being harmful to our health, it cannot be broken down, causing harm to the environment.
Paint:
Unless made from non-toxic alternatives, paints can contain harmful chemicals, including solvents and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
Sealant and glues:
Like paint, seals and glues can cause health issues like allergic reactions, central nervous system symptoms like dizziness and headaches, and certain cancers.
While holiday décor is fun, just make sure you buy from a reputable place. There is nothing wrong with having fun for the holidays, I promise. I still decorate our home, too! Just choose your purchase wisely!
Healthier treats and snacks
Choosing to celebrate with non-toxic Halloween options does not mean you can’t have any fun. There are plenty of options to choose from if you look for alternative options instead of conventional brands; just know there’s no right or wrong decision here. It’s what works best for your family.
Halloween and sweet treats go hand in hand, but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice health for the sake of a spooktacular celebration. In fact, you can create delicious yet wholesome treats and snacks that both kids and adults will love. Here are some ideas to consider:
Frightfully Delicious Fruit:
Encourage healthy eating with spooky fruit platters. Slice apples into monster mouths with almond “teeth,” use grapes for edible “eyeballs,” or create clementine pumpkins. These options not only look the part but also offer vitamins and fiber.
Witch’s Brew Smoothies:
Blend up green smoothies and serve them in cauldron-like cups. You can add spinach, banana, and pineapple for a vibrant and nutrient-rich concoction. Call it “witch’s brew” to add a playful twist.
Mini Mummy Wraps:
Use whole-grain tortillas to make mini mummy wraps. Fill them with lean protein like turkey or chicken, hummus, and various veggies. Slice them into spooky mummy shapes, and voila—a balanced and tasty snack.
Creepy Carrot Fingers:
Create carrot “fingers” by shaping baby carrots into spooky digits and attaching an almond “nail” with cream cheese or hummus. These crunchy snacks are fun to eat and offer nutritional benefits.
Organic Candy Alternatives:
If you prefer to offer traditional Halloween candy, look for organic and natural alternatives without artificial colors or flavors. Choose candies that use fruit or vegetable-based dyes and sweeteners like honey or maple syrup. Here are some of my favorite brands that we trust for sweet treats:
Homemade Energy Bites:
Whip up a batch of homemade energy bites using oats, nut butter, honey, and dark chocolate chips. Shape them into pumpkin balls for a festive touch.
Chocolate-Covered “Boonanas”:
Dip banana slices in dark chocolate and add edible googly eyes to create ghostly “boonanas.” The combination of potassium and antioxidants makes this treat a healthier option.
Remember, the key to offering healthy treats and snacks on Halloween is to make them visually appealing and fun. Kids are more likely to enjoy nutritious options when presented playfully and imaginatively. These non-toxic and wholesome treats ensure that your Halloween celebration is not only spooktacular but also a boon for your family’s well-being.
Trick or treating tips and alternatives
Over the past few years, I’ve noticed how few kids we see in our neighborhood on Halloween. We’ve taken our kids out to trick or treat but have decided recently that we won’t continue that tradition anymore. While it was fun, our concerns over safety have increased, and we would prefer not to have our kids in the cold. Instead, we use the evening to spend time as a family, play games or watch a movie, and skip buying costumes or candy. We’ve brainstormed ideas over the last few months and created a list of fun, safer alternatives to trick or treating:
Movie night
The kids want to create a movie theater in our basement this year, and I am so excited to see this come together. They want to make homemade popcorn, have a concession stand, and print out movie tickets so they can choose which movie to ‘go to’ that night. I love their creativity and can’t wait to see how they put everything together. We’ll have a few fun treats with their popcorn and watch a movie together.
Homemade pizza and board game
We have pizza night often, but this could easily become a themed evening with shaped pizzas, fun sides, and a board game to end the night.
Church harvest festival
Growing up, we did not celebrate Halloween. Instead, we celebrated the harvest season, and our church would put on a festival. Families could dress up in safe, kid-friendly costumes and visit booths where they could bob for apples, play carnival games, and participate in a cakewalk. It was a safe way to celebrate without fear of safety or exposure to harmful situations.
Trunk or treat
This has become increasingly popular over the years, and it’s terrific for families with younger children who may not want to be out on a work or school night. Kids can still dress up and experience trick or treating while confined to a smaller area.
Safety Tips
While we’re conjuring up a non-toxic Halloween, ensuring your celebration is safe for all the little ghouls and goblins is equally essential. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind:
Well-Lit Pathways:
Ensure that your walkways and doorstep are well-lit to prevent trips and falls. Solar-powered or energy-efficient LED lights can add a spooky yet safe atmosphere.
Costume Safety:
Choose costumes that are safe for children to wear. Look for flame-resistant materials and avoid costumes with long, trailing fabric that might pose a tripping hazard. Use makeup or face paint instead of masks to ensure good visibility.
Adult Supervision:
Children should always be accompanied by a responsible adult while trick-or-treating, especially when crossing streets. Remind kids to use crosswalks and look both ways.
Emergency Contact Information:
Ensure that children have emergency contact information on them, just in case they get separated from the group. Get to know your neighbors and consider participating in or organizing a neighborhood watch for Halloween. This can help ensure a safe and friendly atmosphere.
Check Treats:
Before enjoying any treats, carefully inspect them to ensure they’re in original, unopened packaging. This is particularly important if your child has food allergies or sensitivities.
Conclusion
We’ve explored non-toxic Halloween ideas that are kind to your kids and the environment, shared wholesome snacks that nourish the body while tantalizing the taste buds, and enchanted your celebrations with safety tips to ensure every step is taken with care and consideration.
These non-toxic Halloween celebrations help you get into the holiday spirit without worrying about potential harm or negative health impacts. As you gather your little ones for a night of fun memories, remember that your choices can positively impact your family’s health and well-being.
