As women, we are exposed to over 160 toxic chemicals before we leave our homes. Toxic products like free radicals, harsh preservatives, and synthetic perfumes are common ingredients in the average woman’s beauty routine. While it may seem like no big deal, these toxic products build up in our systems, causing a variety of health issues like respiratory upset, liver issues, reproductive issues, and cancer.

What is SPF, and why do I need it?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. The number next to that abbreviation indicates how well the product protects you from the sun. Using a product with SPF in it helps protect your skin from sunburn and simplifies your beauty routine. In addition to increasing your tolerance to the sun, protecting your skin from burning is important in preventing skin cancer. 

Important ingredients to avoid when finding the best non-toxic tinted moisturizer

You mainly use a tinted moisturizer to hydrate your skin and provide light coverage. Using products with ingredients that dry out your skin or use chemical sunscreens defeats the purpose.

Here are a few ingredients to limit or avoid when choosing a good tinted moisturizer:

Parabens:

These well-known endocrine disruptors are used as preservatives in makeup products to extend their shelf life. They can cause hormonal issues leading to large issues in your body.

Fragrance:

The word ‘fragrance’ on a label is used to explain an undisclosed number of potentially toxic ingredients, including more endocrine disruptors and other allergens linked to skin irritation.

Alcohol:

If you struggle with oily skin, alcohol may be part of the problem. It can exacerbate dry skin, forcing your body to overcompensate.

Dimethicone:

​Used as a skin protectant, this silicone-based ingredient is known to cause rash, hives, and trouble breathing.

​Seed oils:

Sunflower oil is a common ingredient found in everything from highly processed foods to some makeup products. Recent research has shown that overconsumption of these oils makes you more susceptible to sunburns, increasing your need for sunscreen. 

Many tinted moisturizers contain SPF. While this is an excellent option, you’ll want to avoid these ingredients commonly found in chemical sunscreens:

• oxybenzone
• avobenzone
• homosalate 
• octinoxate

Because of their toxic effects, Hawaii and Key West have banned oxybenzone and octinoxate sunscreens. If there are concerns for marine life, we probably shouldn’t be using them either.

While these chemical sunscreens absorb the sun’s UV rays, our skin also absorbs them, potentially harming our health.

​Instead of toxic sunscreens, opt for safer alternatives such as:

• Zinc Oxide
• Titanium Dioxide

These are the only two ingredients the Food and Drug Administration deemed safe and effective.

What is tinted moisturizer?

Tinted moisturizers are face lotions with a touch of foundation added in. Some Have buildable coverage, while others are meant to be used as the base of your makeup routine. I like using them on days when I don’t want to put on a face full of makeup but still want a little coverage.

BB Cream, CC Cream, or Tinted Moisturizer. What’s the difference?

​Each of these products has different uses. While they may all be a great option, the one to choose depends on your personal preference for everyday use. 

BB cream- Usually offers medium coverage, is thicker than face lotion, and has limited shades available, so you may be unable to match your skin tone well enough.

CC cream- Used for color correction and fine lines more than anything else, offers light coverage that isn’t buildable on its own, and contains minimal SPF.

Tinted moisturizer- tinted moisturizer can be used on its own for a more natural look or under your foundation that offers buildable coverage.
